On 21 October Columbia University’s Maison Française held a roundtable discussion, “The Humanities and the MLA Today,” which featured Marianne Hirsch, 2013 MLA president; Mary Louise Pratt, former MLA president; Pierre Force, dean of humanities, Columbia University; and Carlos Alonso, member of the MLA Task Force on Graduate Education and dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Columbia. Panelists considered current debates about the future of education in the humanities, the politics of language in the age of globalization, publishing and scholarly communication in the digital age, and the future of graduate education.
