Dan Edelstein is William H. Bonsall Professor of French and, by courtesy, professor of history at Stanford University, where he chairs the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages. He is the author of The Terror of Natural Right: Republicanism, the Cult of Nature, and the French Revolution and The Enlightenment: A Genealogy. He recently edited, with Keith M. Baker, Scripting Revolution: A Historical Approach to the Comparative Study of Revolutions. Edelstein is also active in the digital humanities, notably through the project Mapping the Republic of Letters. He is working on a history of early modern rights (“The Spirit of Rights”) and a study of “permanent revolution.”
